Who’s she? The big cat who could be mother

A RARE Amur tigress arrived in Yorkshire yesterday as part of efforts to save the species.
The three-year-old named Tschuna will make a new home at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster, where she will be introduced to one of the resident tigers, Vladimir, after the pair were handpicked to breed together. Another female is already at the park.
Only 450 of the animals are left in the wild, mainly in Siberia.
They are the largest of the big cats but are critically endangered due to poaching for their skin and bones and loss of habitat.
Born in Germany, Tschuna has been living at Dudley Zoo in the Midlands but will now take up home at the wildlife park’s Land of the Tigers feature which has been designed as a breeding facility for the species.
Park director Cheryl Williams said: “Work will start to gradually introduce Vladimir to her when we feel the time is right.
“In the wild tigers are solitary with a male’s territory encompassing three or four females’ territories so it is very natural to keep two females and one male.”
