Cheetahs, like all wildlife, are not meant to be caged up in barren environments. Using wild animals for entertainment stunts the animal’s social and mental abilities as the industry uses torture tactics in order to get animals to perform tricks. Instead of spending the money to see The Counselor this week, check out ADI’s new film about rescuing wildlife from the entertainment business titled Lion Ark. ADI CALLS OUT CHEETAH CRUELTY IN THE COUNSELOR FILM
Leading animal protection organization Animal Defenders International (ADI) has criticized ‘The Counselor’ – released today and directed by Ridley Scott, starring Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Michael Fassbender – for featuring a cheetah.
Jan Creamer, ADI President: “Cheetahs are wild animals with needs that cannot possibly be met in captivity, especially when forced to perform in films like The Counselor. I ask Ridley Scott, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Michael Fassbender to have no part in exploiting vulnerable animals for entertainment by pledging not to work with ‘animal actors’ in future. Instead of watching The Counselor, you can see big cats rescued from the entertainment industry in ADI’s uplifting new action-documentary film Lion Ark.”ADI undercover investigations have revealed violence and electric shocks used to train elephants to perform the tricks in the movies ‘Water for Elephants’ and ‘Zookeeper’, both of which received an American Humane Association assurance.
In captivity, animals are deprived of all the normal, social and mental stimulation that these animals would enjoy in the wild. They live in barren environments, where they remain until wanted for a performance. They are trained to do tricks and their compliance may be gained through withdrawal of food, water or affection, or beatings.
The cheetah which appears in ‘The Counselor’ was supplied by Eagle Heights Wildlife Park in Kent, in the UK, which keeps 150-200 birds, as well as reptiles, meerkats and otters.
Actors speaking out with ADI against the use of animals in entertainment include: Ricky Gervais, Bob Barker, Sir Paul McCartney, Jorja Fox, Brian May, Lynsey de Paul and Corey Feldman.
Following a successful tour of film festivals around the world, ADI’s film Lion Ark which follows the worlds largest scale rescue of lions and other animals from circuses in Bolivia, will today begin a 7 day screening in New York and Los Angeles: www.lionarkthemovie.com/
