Organization: The Panther Ridge Conservation Center in Wellington is a nonprofit habitat that provides lifelong homes and care for endangered and exotic big cats that have been abandoned, abused or neglected. The center also is an education and research facility and offers school group visits. The center's 18 cats include panthers, cougars, caracals, cheetahs, clouded leopards, jaguars, leopards, ocelots and servals.

How long have you been volunteering there?
More than a year.
Why do you volunteer?
I love helping animals. Volunteering allows for close interaction with the animals.
Why did you choose this organization?
I did this type of volunteer work in Las Vegas 12 years before moving to South Florida in June 2012. I needed to find a similar type of volunteer opportunity.
Describe your volunteer role.
I assist with care and feeding of all animals, maintenance, special projects and event assistance as needed.
What are your goals when you volunteer?
To provide the absolute best care and environment I can to all animals.
What challenges have you faced?
Attending to the care of animals that may be a little on edge that particular day due to changes in routine(s) and personnel at the center.
What does your organization need?
As for volunteers, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can spare at least one full day per week. We will teach them everything they need to know about the husbandry of our incredible cats. Consistency is the most important component of a great volunteer. Besides monetary donations of any size, we need the services of a welder, a good tree trimmer, containers of bleach, commercial hoses and a lightly used cargo van. The entire wish list is on our website.
Are any special events coming up?
Our fourth annual Walk on the Wild Side is our major fundraiser of the year [and is] on March 16, 2014.  It will be held at Panther Ridge and will include tours, silent and live auctions, great food and "adoptions" of the incredible big cats that live here.
Is there a moment that stands out that made you think, "This is why I volunteer?"
Feeding Charlie (a cheetah) his lunch and staying with him until he is finished.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
There are never too many animal care volunteers.
