The story behind the video of a dog cleaning a lion’s teeth

It's a video the Internet loved: A dachshund named Milo cleaning the teeth of a lion named Bonedigger. The unlikely pair, who took the Web by storm, have an even better story to share.

The lion and the wiener dog have been buddies since they were babies. When the lion was just a cub, he came to the Garold Wayne Interactive Zoological Park in Wynnewood, Okla., with a bone disease that made it hard for him to walk.

Joe Schreibvogel, the zoo's Entertainment Director, who lives on the zoo grounds, took the lion cub into his house and raised him, along with his litter of dachshund puppies. As the video shows, the two learn to get along at an early age. And it's adorable. The two played together, ate together and, now, spend their days together.

The video of the lion and the dog has brought worldwide attention to the Oklahoma zoo, which suffered about $18,000 worth of damage when a recent tornado struck nearby.

Despite that, the zoo opened its gates to animals, "domestic and exotic," which became homeless due to the storms, according to spokesperson Daniel Cotton. About 100 animals have sought shelter there, from dogs and horses to snakes and ferrets. "Being recently affected by the storms and tornadoes in Oklahoma we are barely getting back to normal," Cotton wrote Yahoo in an email. And from this video, it's clear this zoo is pretty far from ordinary.
