Sand cats, fennec foxes are the newest members of the Kansas City Zoo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The two newest additions to the Kansas City Zoo will very likely make you say, "Awww!"

The zoo announced that it has welcomed two sand cats and two fennec foxes in exhibits near the lions in the Africa section of the park, currently open to the public.

According to a news release from the Kansas City Zoo, sand cats are small African cats that are similar in size to domestic house cats and are found in areas from the Sahara Desert to the Middle East and into Central Asia.

Adapted specifically for the harsh climate of the desert, they have thick fur to shelter them from the hottest days and the coolest nights. They also have hair on the soles of their feet that protect them from the hot sand. Hunting mostly at night, sand cats’ large ears help them locate rodents, insects and reptiles hiding underneath the sand.

The two 7-month-old brother sand cats are named Anubis and Osiris after ancient Egyptian Gods.
The zoo’s fennec foxes are two 1-year-old sisters named Pink and Adele.

According to the Kansas City Zoo, fennec foxes are the smallest species of fox in the world, weighing only one to three pounds. They have very large ears, compared to their small body size, that help them listen for their prey in the sand.

Those ears also help them regulate their body temperature and keep them cool in the hot sun. Fennec foxes are desert dwellers that can be found in the Sahara Desert and deserts in Northern Africa and Northern Sinai. When a fennec fox finds a mate, they stay together for life.
