Big cats seen in Durango, New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) –Big cats have been spotted a little too close to home lately.
A mountain lion has people in Durango a little nervous. According to the Durango Herald, it’s been spotted a lot in the Junction Creek area over the last few weeks. One resident saw it feeding on a deer on the side of a highway.
On Saturday, one resident saw it kill a deer outside their window, about two feet from their back door.
While seeing wildlife is not unusual for residents there, seeing a mountain lion this close to homes is, especially when it doesn’t seem scared of humans.
Those with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, say the big cat is doing what big cats do and at this point don’t plan to relocate it because it has not threatened any humans.
It’s not just mountain lions that are active, so are bobcats. A good number of them have ended up at the New Mexico Wildlife Center in Española.
The group, which helps care for orphaned or injured animals with the goal of returning them to the wild, has five large cats right now. They will have to stay with the group until spring and that translates into a lot of food. The organization is asking hunters for their meat scraps to help feed the cats.
They say together the cats eat about 40 pounds of meat per week.
They say that meat can’t have spices or the cats won’t eat it.
