White male tiger new guest at Indore zoo

INDORE: There is a new addittion to the big cat family at the Kamla Nehru Zoological Park, Indore, as a young white male tiger from Bhilai zoo made its entry on Sunday afternoon.
Two-year-old Rajjan, the white tiger, has been brought to Indore Zoo for a breeding programme. Zoo in charge Dr Uttam Yadav said, "After several months we finally got clearance from Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and Bhilai Zoo to bring the tiger." He said there were currently six striped big cats in the zoo and with the entry of Rajjan, the number goes up to seven big cats.

"We have more than 300 animals in the zoo, including three white tigresses Diya, Shivani and their mother Sita, but no male white tiger. The purpose of bringing the tiger is to increase the population of white tigers, to keep the generation going," said the zoo in charge. Rajjan will be kept in a separate cage for a week, "Due to change of location, place and environment, we will keep the tiger separately, so that he can adapt to his new home". He said that Rajjan's diet will include small quantities of fresh meat and chicken necks. "It will be difficult for the tiger to have fresh meat as his usual diet in Bhilai zoo was boiled meat. We will try to keep an eye on his diet and try to make him feel relaxed," Yadav said.

The tiger was brought to Indore zoo under the exchange programme, in return the Indore zoo handed over a pair of pigeons, peacocks, jackals and tortoise to Bhilai Zoo.
Earlier four-year-old white tigress Riddhi was exchanged for B1 yellow tiger from Van Vihar, Bhopal.

"After a week we will try to shift Rajjan with three females in their enclosure and see whether he will try to adjust with them," said Yadav.
Recently, a few exotic birds also arrived from Hyderabad to Indore under the courtesy of animal exchange programme of Central Zoo Authority (CZA). "In the exchange programme, we handed over a pair of peacocks and a pair of king cobras to Hyderabad, and brought four pairs of white ibis, fischer lovebirds along with green lovebirds at the zoo said Dr Uttam Yadav.
