Esso tiger Tango rescued by Lincolnshire Woodside Wildlife and Falconry Park

The Esso tiger Tango is one of two big cats being unveiled to the public this morning at Lincolnshire's Woodside Wildlife and Falconry Park.

Owners of the centre at Newball near Langworth confirmed today that the male and female tigers had been rescued in a £250,000 operation. Eighteen-year-old former Esso tiger and TV star Tango and an eight-year-old female called Julia had been mistreated by a German circus.

They were seized following complaints last year - but were due to be put down by Belgian authorities until Woodside founder Neil Mumby intervened. "We first found out about the tigers about six months ago and it has taken this long to sort out all the paperwork," said Mr Mumby, who started the park on a greenfield site in 2001. "So it's been six months of planning and building an enclosure - a lot of hard work by our team here at Woodside. We thought it was really important to rescue these two animals because they would have been put to sleep. But we did it for two other reasons - to raise the profile of the park and, of course, to attract more visitors. They are the only tigers on view in a park in Lincolnshire and we hope many people will come to see them. It's particularly good because Tango the male was the Esso tiger and we've brought him back here to Lincolnshire."

Mr Mumby confirmed that the tigers had arrived last night and were sleeping off their travel ordeal before being allowed to roam inb their purpose-built enclosure. The tigers aren't the only new feline arrivals at the park - a family of European lynx were introduced only three weeks ago.
