A bobcat sits next to a trap in South

A bobcat captured
at the University of Rhode Island East Farm in Kingston and tagged with a
GPS device in November will help researchers learn more about its
habitat use and prey. “This bobcat is wandering a lot farther than we
expected,” says Charles Brown, wildlife biologist with the state
Department of Environmental Management, who is assisting with the
research. “We’ve tracked him to Snug Harbor, Bonnet Shores, Matunuck,
Charlestown. We’ve lost track of him for a few days at a time as he
wanders, but we always catch up to him.”
Researchers hope to
capture more of the big cats to understand their population numbers.
Bobcats weigh up to 35 pounds, and eat a wide variety of small mammals
and other prey. South Kingstown and Westerly are hot spots for sighting
the big cat.
