Tennessee animal shelter won't accept cats

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WVLT) - Nashville CBS affiliate WTVF reports that the Mt. Juliet animal shelter will no longer accept stray cats or cats surrendered by owners. A crowd protested the new policy that went into affect last week by chanting 'save the cats'. Protesters worry the change will cause a spike in stray cats and put more pressure on rescue groups.

The Mt. Juliet Police Department oversees the shelter and Chief James Hambrick told WTVF, “I know it’s not popular among some. I am looking at this as an administrator, and how we can serve the entire public, and not one sector of the public.”

Hambrick told WTVF he's trying to cut back on the workload of employees so that they can focus on stray dogs that pose more risk to the public. “It will give those officers a chance to do something they haven’t been able to do,” said Chief Hambrick. “They will be able to patrol and handle other calls for services other than when it’s just an emergency.”

Injured cats will still be accepted according to WTVF
