A
tiger and two cubs were spotted for the first time at Timli village,
located near the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border, on Saturday.
The
news has excited the forest department, which now plans to use trap
cameras to track the movement of the recently-traced big cats.
On
the midnight of January 31, a patrol team of Kalsi forest division
spotted a tiger with two cubs on the Vikasnagar-Saharanpur highway near
Timli village.

“Ranger
Mahaveer Rawat with other staff were on routine patrol and saw a tiger
with two cubs near Timli. There is little chance of confusion as our
staff saw the big cats with the vehicle light directly hitting them. We
have failed to discover the pug marks, but will now be using trap
cameras to track the movement of the tigers,” Kalsi forest division’s
DFO Ram Gopal Verma said.
A
decade ago, some Gujjars had informed forest staff about tiger presence
in Kalsi forest division, but the report was never verified.
“As
Timli is connected with the Rajaji National Park, so presence of tiger
can’t be ruled out there. Even in 2005, there were reports about
presence of big cats in that area,” Wildlife scientist Bivash Pandav
said.
