The owner of the four- star hotel, Layla Cajee, has raised the cubs from birth.

She said: 'The animals were born in the lodge but I had to adopt them after they were rejected by their mothers - for being the runts of the family.
'In the wild, they would not have stood a chance of survival without their mother's protection. So it's nice to see them growing up together.'
Bella the tiger, five months, is the leader of the pack, while the three lions, Delano, Romeo and Maximus, are also five months, but more timid.
Meanwhile the eldest - Milika the hyena, six months - is the most mischievous in the motley crew.
Layla said: 'The naughtiest of them all is Milika - she's very boisterous and likes to play fight with her siblings.'

Is Pet Ownership Sustainable? Yes, it is.

Apr. 22, 2013 — There has been much talk about sustainability, but little attention has been paid to its nutritional aspects. University of Illinois animal sciences researcher Kelly Swanson, in cooperation with scientists at natural pet food maker The Nutro Company, have raised a number of important questions on the sustainability of pet ownership.

Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present while not compromising the future. Swanson said that although the carbon footprint aspect of sustainability receives the most attention, nutritional aspects are also important. "If you just change the diet a little, the financial and environmental costs associated with it are quite different," he explained.

The pet food industry faces some unique issues. First, it is tightly interlinked with livestock production and the human food system. Second, many people consider their pets to be part of the family, so the food has to be culturally acceptable to the owner as well as good for the animal. Finally, pet food has to be affordable.

As with human food, dietary ingredient selection and nutrient composition affect the sustainability of the pet food system. Protein is expensive, both financially and environmentally, so the choice of protein source and amount in the diet are particularly important.

There are thousands of widely varying pet foods on the market. Many are formulated to appeal to the owners, who think their pets need extremely high levels of protein and other nutrients. Often, they contain human-grade ingredients, thus competing directly with the human food system, which will have to feed a human population that is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050.

This does not need to happen. Dogs and cats require specific nutrients, not ingredients. It is possible to meet nutritional requirements using a wide variety of nutrient sources. Previous research by Swanson showed that kittens fed vastly different protein:carbohydrate ratios all remained healthy.
For example, animal protein can be replaced by plant protein, which requires substantially less water and energy to produce. Soy-based proteins are a common pet food ingredient, and their production is estimated to be 6 to 20 times more efficient in terms of fossil fuel requirements.

Pet food manufacturers also make heavy use of the secondary products from the human food chain. "That's great from a sustainability standpoint because we're using the products that would otherwise not be used," said Swanson.

In short, there are strategies to make pet food manufacturing more sustainable while meeting the animals' nutritional needs and keeping the products affordable. Pet food is a $55 billion industry worldwide, so adopting sustainable practices could have a global impact.

Nutritional sustainability is not just about minimizing environmental impact, it also involves promoting pet health through appropriate nutrition and food quality and safety. "Advancement in areas of nutritional sustainability will help us develop innovative products to improve pet health and nutrition and produce quality and safe pet food," said Rebecca Carter, research scientist at The Nutro Company. "Nutritional sustainability is part of a wider sustainability platform to improve the sustainability of our products and promote the sustainability of pet ownership and the pet food industry."

However, pet owners also need to adopt sustainable feeding practices. Overfeeding and obesity of pets is a growing concern. Swanson stresses the importance of educating "consumers, veterinarians, pet food professionals, everybody."

"They're being fed as much as 20 percent more than they need, so their health is poor, and you're wasting all that food," said Swanson. "Especially with cats, it's very difficult." Cats do not self-regulate their food intake well and have a decided preference for protein and fat. Swanson said it would be helpful to develop a model that would estimate the environmental impact of pet foods and serve as a basis for strategies to increase the sustainability of pet foods in the future.

Such a model could be used to respond to those who argue that we should not keep pets at all. A controversial study published in 2009 equated the cost of keeping a mid-sized dog eating a normal diet with the environmental cost of driving an SUV 12,500 miles a year. A New Zealand environmentalist has launched a campaign, "Cats to Go," which aims to ban all cats from the country.
Both the study and the proposed ban have provoked heated, angry responses from animal lovers. Nonetheless, the issues they raise should be taken into account. Pet ownership is increasing in Eastern Europe, some areas of Latin America, and the China-Pacific region, so the impact of pet food production will certainly increase.

Pets play an important role in our lives and society, so sustaining pet ownership is critical in maintaining these benefits. Research has demonstrated the positive impact pets have on both the emotional and physical health of people with whom they have contact.
The researchers concluded that there are no "good" or "bad" practices; just some that are more or less sustainable. They hope that this article will serve to highlight areas where changes could be made to current practices and stimulate discussion within the industry so that the overall sustainability of pet foods may be improved in the future.

Study of Pumas in Santa Cruz Mountains Documents Impact of Predator/Human Interaction

Apr. 17, 2013 — In the first published results of more than three years of tracking mountain lions in the Santa Cruz Mountains, UC Santa Cruz researchers document how human development affects the predators' habits.

In findings published today (April 17) in the online journal PLOS ONE, UCSC associate professor of environmental studies Chris Wilmers and colleagues with the UC Santa Cruz Puma Project describe tracking 20 lions over 6,600 square miles for three years. Researchers are trying to understand how habitat fragmentation influences the physiology, behavior, ecology, and conservation of pumas in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

"Depending on their behavior, animals respond very differently to human development," Wilmers said. Lions are "totally willing to brave rural neighborhoods, but when it comes to reproductive behavior and denning they need more seclusion."

The large predators living relatively close to a metropolitan area require a buffer from human development at least four times larger for reproductive behaviors than for other activities such as moving and feeding.

"In addition, pumas give a wider berth to types of human development that provide a more consistent source of human interface," such as neighborhoods, than they do in places where human presence is more intermittent, as with major roads or highways, the authors write.

37 lions captured

Wilmers and his team, which includes graduate students, and a dog tracking team working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, have captured 37 lions to date. Twenty-12 females and eight males-were closely followed between 2008 and 2011. Once captured and anesthetized, the lions' sex was determined, they were weighed, measured, fit with an ear tag and a collar with a GPS transmitter. The collars, developed, in part, by an interdisciplinary team at UCSC, including wildlife biologists and engineers, transmit location data every four hours.

Researchers are able to track the lions' movements and calculate locations of feeding sites, communication spots, and dens. Pumas communicate with scent markings known as "scrapes" where they scrape leaves or duff into a pile then urinate on it. Males typically make the scrapes, advertising their presence and availability. Females visit scrapes when looking for mates.

The Puma Project team set up and monitored remote cameras at 44 scrape locations and documented males and females, which confirmed GPS data from the pumas' collars.

Researchers also found 10 den sites belonging to 10 different female lions. They visited 224 "GPS clusters" where activities suggested a feeding site, and located prey remains at 115 sites.

Wilmers said the research is helping identify corridors where pumas typically travel between areas of high-quality habitat. This includes neighborhoods where females often are willing to explore for food for their fast-growing brood.

Brushes with humans

Brushes with humans have resulted in casualties when lions were struck by cars or caught raiding livestock. One male known as 16M was shown to have crossed busy Highway 17 between Scotts Valley and Los Gatos 31 times. He was hit and badly injured in November 2010 and recently shot and killed after attacking goats. A female, 18F, who may have been 16M's mate, was killed in 2011 crossing the winding highway.

Eight of the 11 pumas that died during the study were killed when caught attacking domestic livestock. Wilmers advised owners of goats or other livestock to consider keeping them in a "fully-enclosed mountain lion-proof structure."

While Wilmers advised people to proceed with caution in any known mountain lion roaming grounds he said humans need not panic about the presence of mountain lions.

The study's conservation goals are meant to help lions survive in the midst of rapidly growing human development by building awareness of lions' behavior and providing safe transit opportunities under or over major highways.

The 6 Most Endangered Feline Species



Poaching, habitat loss, inbreeding and hybridization. These are just a few of the threats faced by many wild feline species around the globe. Here are six of the world’s most endangered feline species and subspecies—some of which may not survive into the next century.

1. Amur leopards

Let’s start with the good news: The population of critically endangered Amur leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) has increased an amazing 50 percent in the past five years, according to new surveys by WWF Russia. But here’s the bad news: Even with that increase in population, there are only 48 to 50 Amur leopards remaining in the wilds of Russia, with maybe eight to 11 more across the border in China.

Although much of the leopards’ range in Russia is theoretically protected, the big cats still face a variety of perils, including poaching, the destruction of their forest habitats and climate change. Amur leopards were not recognized as their own subspecies until 2001, when genetic tests revealed their distinction from other leopards, which may have slowed efforts to protect them. Luckily, conservation efforts over the past 12 years have worked. According to WWF Russia, the leopards have not just increased their population, they have also increased their range, spreading out into habitat beyond the small pockets they have occupied over the past decade. The leopards may have even started crossing the border into North Korea, a country where they have not been seen for decades.

Unfortunately, another potential threat has arisen. Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), also critically endangered, have doubled their population in the same region where Amur leopards live. The two big feline species will probably not compete with each other for food—they prey on different animals—but they do compete for space. At least three leopards have been killed by tigers in recent years. It’s too early to tell whether the problem will grow in the future, but the situation will need careful monitoring.

2. Iberian lynxes

Habitat loss and two diseases that were introduced into Spain and Portugal by humans have taken their toll on the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus). Fifty years ago the species numbered about 4,000 animals. Today its wild population is between 100 and 200 cats.

Luckily, a few dozen additional lynx reside in a captive breeding program, which for the first last month froze the embryos and egg cells from two females for use in future breeding efforts. The two females—one of which had already given birth to 16 cubs—were both suffering from health problems and were about to be sterilized to preserve their quality of life. Before the operations scientists flushed their ovaries, preserving not just fertilized embryos that the cats would not have been able to bring to term but also other egg cells. This is the first time that embryos from this species have been cryopreserved, and the effort’s success increases the hope that Iberian lynxes will survive, at least in captivity.


3. Asiatic cheetahs


Asiatic cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) once roamed throughout the Middle East and central Asia before hunting all but wiped them out. Today the last 100 or so Asiatic cheetahs live in Iran, where they face habitat degradation, poaching and the loss of their prey from overhunting by humans. Scientists don’t know exactly how many Iranian cheetahs remain, but a long-term camera-trap survey has so far managed to count 20 of the big cats, including seven females. Unfortunately, one of the females was killed by shepherds earlier this year, supposedly to protect their flock from predation.

Camera trapping is currently suspended during livestock season, but the Iranian Cheetah Society is still out with handheld digital cameras. This week it announced that the country’s only known cheetah cubs are doing well in northeastern Iran. The four cubs are roughly a year and a half old and will probably leave their mother in the next few months. The survival rate for Asiatic cheetah cubs is unknown, but bubs in Africa have a 95 percent mortality rate during their first 17 to 18 months so this is great news for the Iranian subspecies.

The full counting effort is expected to continue, but it won’t be easy. The few remaining cheetahs are spread out over thousands of kilometers, making it extremely difficult to track and locate them. The count is also hampered by a lack of equipment, funding and trained field members, although it has support from multiple international organizations.

4. Iriomote cats


The last 100 or so critically endangered Iriomote cats (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis) live exclusively on the 284-square-kilometer Japanese island from which they get their name. These forest-dwelling felines—which aren’t much bigger than domestic cats—probably didn’t face many threats until the human population started to expand on the island. The modern age brought development, predatory domesticated dogs, diseases from domesticated cats, invasive cane toads and wild boars, new roads and, perhaps worst of all, automobiles. So many Iriomote cats have been killed by cars that the island is covered with signs warning drivers to watch out for them—which makes it kind of ironic that one of the few chances you’ll ever get to see an Iriomote cat is in a 60-second video shot in 2010 by a passing motorist.

5. Scottish wildcats

A hundred years ago more than 100,000 Scottish wildcats (Felis silvestris grampia) roamed the Scottish Highlands. Fabled for their ferocity and often referred to as Highland tigers—although they are not much bigger than house cats—the wildcats are now almost completely gone. As I wrote last year, the native wildcats were done in by the introduction of feral and domesticated cats (Felis catus), which not only competed with the wildcats for prey but also bred and hybridized with them, diluting their gene pool to the point where few, if any, remain. Some scientists estimate that there may be fewer than 100 Scottish wildcats left. Even so, the scientists fear that only a handful of the remaining wildcats are genetically pure. A breeding program has been put in place, and new DNA technology might help identify the best and purest prospects for breeding, but in all likelihood the Scottish wildcat will fade away in another couple of generations, if it even takes that long.

6. South China tigers

It’s hard to say how many South China tigers (Panthera tigris amoyensis) remain in the world. In the 1950s there were an estimated 4,000 members of this subspecies, but they didn’t last long after the Communist government of China declared the cats an “enemy of the people” in 1959. Today the subspecies is considered “critically endangered, possibly extinct in the wild.” No sightings of wild South China tigers have been confirmed since the 1970s, when the last known tigers were collected and brought into captivity. Although reports of wild tigers turn up from time to time, none of the sightings have yielded conclusive proof. The most noteworthy event occurred in 2007, when a farmer said he took several photographs of a wild South China tiger, but they were later proved to be frauds.

The only South China tigers that we can verify live in captivity. Breeding efforts over the past 40 years brought the subspecies’ population up to around 100. A few of those cats actually live in South Africa at a reserve set up by the organization Save China’s Tigers, which runs a program to breed and teach captive-born animals how to survive in the wild. Although the effort has successfully bred more than a dozen new tigers in South Africa, it has also earned its share of criticism, most recently in 2011, when one of its tigers broke through an electrified gate and killed another.

The Chinese government says it intends to eventually create a national reserve to allow these rare tigers to live in the wild, but whether that happens or not remains to be seen.

Next?


Sadly, several more cat species could easily join this list. The Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) and the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) are both critically endangered, with populations of about 250 and 200 cats, respectively. The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) numbers about 400, all of which live in a single forest in India. Only about 160 wild Florida panthers remain, although scientists today debate whether or not they should continue to be listed as their own subspecies.

Indonesia’s flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps) was declared endangered in 2008, with no single population larger than 250 adults. As pressures increase, more felines will suffer. And as time progresses, we will probably have a few extinctions to report, because for too many of these species their nine lives are drawing to a close.

The Ethics of Resurrecting Extinct Species

Apr. 8, 2013 — At some point, scientists may be able to bring back extinct animals, and perhaps early humans, raising questions of ethics and environmental disruption.

Within a few decades, scientists may be able to bring back the dodo bird from extinction, a possibility that raises a host of ethical questions, says Stanford law Professor Hank Greely.

Twenty years after the release of Jurassic Park, the dream of bringing back the dinosaurs remains science fiction. But scientists predict that within 15 years they will be able to revive some more recently extinct species, such as the dodo or the passenger pigeon, raising the question of whether or not they should -- just because they can.

In the April 5 issue of Science, Stanford law Professor Hank Greely identifies the ethical landmines of this new concept of de-extinction. "I view this piece as the first framing of the issues," said Greely, director of the Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences. "I don't think it's the end of the story, rather I think it's the start of a discussion about how we should deal with de-extinction."

In "What If Extinction Is Not Forever?" Greely lays out potential benefits of de-extinction, from creating new scientific knowledge to restoring lost ecosystems. But the biggest benefit, Greely believes, is the "wonder" factor. "It would certainly be cool to see a living saber-toothed cat," Greely said. "'Wonder' may not seem like a substantive benefit, but a lot of science -- such as the Mars rover -- is done because of it."

Greely became interested in the ethics of de-extinction in 1999 when one of his students wrote a paper on the implications of bringing back wooly mammoths. "He didn't have his science right -- which wasn't his fault because approaches on how to do this have changed in the last 13 years -- but it made me realize this was a really interesting topic," Greely said.

Scientists are currently working on three different approaches to restore lost plants and animals. In cloning, scientists use genetic material from the extinct species to create an exact modern copy. Selective breeding tries to give a closely-related modern species the characteristics of its extinct relative. With genetic engineering, the DNA of a modern species is edited until it closely matches the extinct species.

All of these techniques would bring back only the physical animal or plant."If we bring the passenger pigeon back, there's no reason to believe it will act the same way as it did in 1850," said co-author Jacob Sherkow, a fellow at the Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences. "Many traits are culturally learned. Migration patterns change when not taught from generation to generation."

Many newly revived species could cause unexpected problems if brought into the modern world. A reintroduced species could become a carrier for a deadly disease or an unintentional threat to a nearby ecosystem, Greely says. "It's a little odd to consider these things 'alien' species because they were here before we were," he said. "But the 'here' they were in is very different than it is now. They could turn out to be pests in this new environment."

When asked whether government policies are keeping up with the new threat, Greely answers "no."
"But that's neither surprising nor particularly concerning," he said. "It will be a while before any revised species is going to be present and able to be released into the environment."

Greely and Sherkow recommend that the government leave de-extinction research to private companies and focus on drafting new regulations. Sherkow says the biggest legal and ethical challenge of de-extinction concerns our own long-lost ancestors. "Bringing back a hominid raises the question, 'Is it a person?' If we bring back a mammoth or pigeon, there's a very good existing ethical and legal framework for how to treat research animals. We don't have very good ethical considerations of creating and keeping a person in a lab," said Sherkow. "That's a far cry from the type of de-extinction programs going on now, but it highlights the slippery slope problem that ethicists are famous for considering."

World’s rarest big cat turns the corner as Amur leopard population grows sharply

April 2013. Specialists of Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, "Land of the Leopard" National Park, WWF and Wildlife Management Department of Primorsky Province have finalized the results of snow track leopard census

Best hopes exceeded

The census produced four happy results, and one alarming development. In general the results exceeded all expectations - 48-50 individual leopards were detected, or 1.5 times more than 5 years ago.

The first bit of good news was that, according to census results, minimum leopard numbers were determined as 43-45 adult individuals and 4-5 cubs. In 2007, 27-34 leopards were recorded. Thus, if the slogan "Only 30 left in the wild!" was recently true, today we can say with confidence that not less than 50 Far Eastern leopards now live in the Russian Far East. Although good news, 50 is still a critically small number for the long term survival of the population.

The second piece of good news, the leopard has moved northwards. For many years the Krounovka River was the northern border of the leopard's range. Three years ago a lonely male left his tracks on the territory of Poltavsky Provincial Wildlife Refuge to the north of that river. This winter a female with a cub was found there. The appearance of the new northernmost cat family is the leopards' response to the successful organization of proper control over the Poltavsky Refuge bylocal authorities. Under the new management the reserve became part of the network of protected areas known as "Land of the Leopard".

The third piece of good news, the leopard has also moved towards the coast. One of the litters was found during the survey was in an area where leopards were previously unrecorded: in the reeds and shrubs of a river delta. This winter there was a high concentration of hare this habitat, and due to the unusually deep snow roe deer moved there as well. Poachers did not realize that wild animals were moving into the area, and so a mother and a cub spent a safe winter by the sea side with plenty of food. 

The fourth piece of good news, the leopard has moved to the south as well. One of the leopards was found on the border with North Korea. No leopards have been observed in this area for a century. It is quite possible that the animal crossed the border and has found some suitable habitat in the forests of China and North Korea. This fact highlights the importance of leopard habitat conservation in North Korea.

Amur tigers

The alarming news
- the winter census revealed 23 Amur tigers living in the territory, double the number compared to 5 years ago! These tigers are not considered as part of the main Changbaishan population, which itself is distinct from the main Russian Sikhote-Alin population and plays a key role in Amur tiger restoration in China. It is believed that differing habitat preferences allow these two competing predators competitors - tiger and leopard - to coexist. However, due to replacement of red deer by sika deer and low wild boar populations, the prey base of tigers and leopards in southwest Primorye has begun to more and more overlap.

Big cat competition


In such conditions, competition between the two rare cats may become an issue - over the past years at least three leopards were killed by tigers. Unfortunately, the results of the winter census added to these statistics. Tracking in 2013 revealed two cases when a tiger chased a leopard. Only the advanced tree-climbing skill of the leopard saved them from their larger cousins. The researchers should pay some serious attention to the problem of competition between Amur tigers and leopards.

The Far Eastern leopard 2013 census was conducted following a traditional methodology based on measuring print size. By recording the location of all tracks GPS-navigators and taking photos of the prints it was possible to minimize the human factor. Climatic conditions were not easy. On the one hand, deep snow and snow drifts obstructed the work - it was extremely difficult to move along the transects. On the other hand, deep snow and frozen snow crust forced animals to concentrate on local habitats, thus decreasing probability of counting the same animal on different routes. Having fresh snow on the crust allowed for quite precise measurement of all encountered prints.

Litters

Locating litters is a not easy task, particularly under severe winter conditions. Nevertheless, field workers registered 4 females with one kitten each, and one litter that has already broken away from its mother. This figure is considered normal for the given number of leopards, though in 2011 no less than 6 litters were counted. The information collected before the census in the fall and winter allows for the assumption that the real number of litters in 2013 is higher than that observed on the routes.

Chinese border leopards

A relatively large quantity of leopard prints were found along the border with China, but unfortunately it was not possible to conduct a simultaneous census in China. Last year, a minimum of 5 different leopards were photographed by camera traps there; Chinese specialists suggest that 8-11 cats inhabit the Hunchun, Wangqing, and Suiyang Nature Reserves, mostly in the vicinity of registered leopards in Russian border zone.

"The Far Eastern leopard, the rarest cat on the Earth, is stepping back from the brink" - comments Dr. Yury Darman, Director of Amur branch WWF Russia. "We started the recovery program in 2001 and now can be proud of having almost 50 leopards in the wild. The most crucial role is played by the establishment of large unified protected area with huge state support, which covers 360,000 hectares of leopard habitat in Russia. It is now necessary to accelerate the creation of a Sino-Russian trans-boundary reserve that would unify six adjacent protected areas encompassing 6,000 square kilometres and make the goal of a sustainable population of 70-100 Far Eastern leopards and 25-30 Amur tigers a realistic one."

Census organizers express their gratitude to Russian border guards for taking active part in the census on the territory they patrol. They provided transportation, shared their excellent knowledge of the surveyed area and provided security along the routes.

1. The Tarpan

The last Tarpan died on a Ukrainian game preserve at Askania Nova in 1876. A prehistoric type of wild horse that once roamed from Southern France and Spain eastwards to central Russia, the Tarpan died out in the wild in the late 1800s. Reasons for its extinction include the destruction of its forest and steppe habitat to make room for people; hunting by farmers averse to their crops being eaten and mares stolen; and absorption into a growing domestic horse population. There have been various attempts to recreate the Tarpan through re-breeding, resulting in horses that do at least resemble their extinct forebears.
