State To Confiscate Woman’s Mountain Lion From Backyard

A mountain lion caged at an Elm Springs home is causing an uproar in the neighborhood.

Cheryl Swartout must give up her big cat to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, or face penalties from local police, according to the Elm Springs Police Department.

Swartout has been keeping a mountain lion in her yard, police said. She is listed as a volunteer for the Arkansas Wildlife Rehabilitators.

Donna Emmons, a neighbor, called authorities Tuesday night to complain about the animal, and police called the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to investigate. A representative for the state commission investigated the situation Wednesday and said they would come pick up the big cat from the home Monday.

Emmons said her daughter found the animal after she heard a growl. Emmons fears for her five-year-old grandson, as well as other children in the neighborhood, she said.

“I’m just scared for the kids,” Emmons said. “I’m scared for anybody that could be outside if this thing gets loose.”

Mark and Cheryl Swartout live at the house, according to police and property records, but neither was home Wednesday. Neighbors said Cheryl Swartout is out of town. 5NEWS contacted her by phone Wednesday, but she would not comment on the situation.

Police said owning wild game such as big cats is illegal in Elm Springs, as per city ordinances. The Swartouts will likely be cited if they refuse to give the animal up Monday, according to Elm Springs police.

The mountain lion is not visible from neighbors’ yards, and one man living nearby told 5NEWS he does not have a problem with the big cat being kept at the home.

“I’m aware that the lady has a small game rehabilitation license, and since I have no small children, it’s not of a major concern to me,” said Harold Duethit. “If I had small children, it might be a concern.”

Bill Hansen, who with his wife, Cindy, owns Sawbill Canoe Outfitters at the end of the road north of Tofte, experienced what he called “the sighting of a lifetime” Saturday evening.

He was headed to town about 7 p.m. when, on a back road near Sawbill Lake, he saw two lynx facing off. The two growled and yowled at each other for about 20 minutes, Hansen said. He made a video with his iPhone showing part of their encounter.

Hansen isn’t sure just what the cats were up to.

“Just from watching domestic cats, I got the hunch it was two males just posturing,” Hansen said. “Once in a while they’d move toward each other, and that would set off another round of yowling. But they never took a swipe at each other.”

Chris Balzer, Department of Natural Resources area wildlife manager at Cloquet, said he isn’t sure what the cats’ behavior means.

“I would assume mating season is well behind us,” Balzer said. “They probably would have kittens already or very soon. It might have been a little territorial dispute? It did appear the smaller of the two lynx retreated and the larger one held its ground. On the other hand, there was no indication of aggressive behavior other than the vocalizations. Maybe things are going well and they just said ‘hi’ to each other.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A tiger and two mountain lions were among a menagerie of wild cats seized from private farmland in rural northeast Kansas, where they lived in inadequate chain-link enclosures and weren’t properly fed or watered, authorities said Monday.

Authorities found a tiger; two mountain lions; three bobcats; two lynx; a type of African cat called a serval; and two skunks on the property. They were taken Sunday from the land belonging to a relative of the animals’ owner and were turned over to animal sanctuaries in Texas, Florida and Kansas.
 
Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie said the owner became combative during the seizure and authorities found methamphetamine. He was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct. He also faces 10 misdemeanor charges related to the care of the animals.

Laurie said authorities became involved in early March after receiving a complaint. Witnesses reported that the owner previously had better pens but moved the animals to the relative’s property about two years ago. The move was supposed to be temporary, but the animals never left, Laurie said.
“It was dirty,” he said. “It was gross.”

The cages were made of chain link panels wired together with hose clamps. They varied in size, with the tiger’s measuring about 20 feet long, 10 feet wide and 7 feet high, Laurie said. The enclosures had mud floors and weren’t staked down.

“My dogs would have been out of there the first day you put them in there,” Laurie said.
Laurie said authorities weren’t immediately able to seize the animals because there was no place to take them. But authorities received permission from the property owner to feed the animals, a Kansas City Zoo veterinarian evaluated them and rescue organizations began lining up new living arrangements.

The owner didn’t live on the property, and, after receiving the complaint, authorities saw him tend to the animals only four or five times, Laurie said.

During the seizure, staff with the Humane Society of the United States and the Kansas City Zoo helped sedate the animals and prepare them to be moved. The Humane Society said in a news release that the tiger was shipped to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas; the two cougars to In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center in Wylie, Texas; the bobcats, lynx and serval to Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Fla.; and the skunks to Operation Wildlife in Linwood, Kan.
Laurie said the owner is cooperating with authorities and released all the animals to the rescue organizations. The Humane Society said the animals will be held at the sanctuaries pending the final disposition of the case.

Chief Wildlife Warden, SWH Naqvi has been directed to prepare a proposal for translocation of big cats, so as to forward the same for approval from the union government.

The issue of translocation of tigers and leopards from core and buffer areas of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) here is under active consideration in view of an increase in the population of the wild cats.
"There is a considerable rise in the population of big cats in the area and it (TATR landscape) might not be enough to accommodate their rising numbers," Principal Secretary (Forests), Pravin Pardeshi said.
Pardeshi was here to address a Workshop on 'Mitigation of Man-Animal Conflict In Tadoba Landscape' at Moharli, 28 kms from here on Sunday.

"Translocation is a complex issue that needs to be addressed from various angles. It involves political and scientific angle which is being worked out. As of now, all that I can say is that the number of carnivores in the area is very high and it would be difficult to imagine the situation after a decade. A stage might reach, either the humans might have to be shifted or the big cats," he remarked.

As the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has given its green signal, Chief Wildlife Warden, SWH Naqvi has been directed to prepare a proposal for translocation of big cats, so as to forward the same for approval from the union government, he said.

The workshop was addressed by senior forest officials including P Kalyan Kumar, Deputy Director (Buffer) and Sunil Limaye, Chief Conservator of Forests, Sanjay Gandhi National Park , Vidya Atre, expert on Leopard Ecology and Dr Habib Bilal from Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun among others.

The officials discussed issues pertaining to man-animal conflict and urged the villagers to take precautions.

Gram Panchayat Sarpanchs and Eco Development Committee representatives from the area also expressed their views during the interaction session.

A proposal for preparing a technical manual to deal with sensitive or conflict situation for the benefit of locals was also approved during the workshop.

Pardeshi assured to take up the matter of veterinary doctors for the department so that a couple of full time vets would be posted for Forest Department in Chandrapur besides construction of a Wildlife Rescue Center at Nagpur.

After Mhadei find, tiger expert on big cat trail in Cotigao



PANAJI: A team of experts led by noted conservation zoologist Kota Ullas Karanth has commenced work on a comprehensive tiger survey in the Cotigao wildlife sanctuary and other protected areas after the recent success of the camera trap method.
The Goa government had recently cleared the decks for an intensive survey and within a few weeks of the go-ahead the forest department had captured a tigress on camera within the limits of the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.

The extensive study, which will extend for four years till 2017, will rely on refined protocols such as camera trap findings to assess the presence of the big cat and the prey base in Goa's forests.

"He (Karanth) has given a list of 45 spots in different sanctuaries to lay camera traps and line transects for the survey," said Richard D'Souza, principal chief conservator of forests. While the expert will conduct the study, the forest department will also independently do its work, especially in Mhadei.

The protected areas of Cotigao, Neturlim, Molem national park, Bondla and Mhadei form a contiguous corridor with tiger areas in Karnataka.

The tiger estimation done by the forest department in the past has shown the presence of tigers. Three had been counted in 1993, five in 1997 and 2002.

Though the forest department had been in a denial syndrome for a long time earlier, things have changed recently with significant findings.

"This vindicates the stand taken by some officials and animal lovers who have claimed the big cats' existence here for more than a decade and a half," a source said.

Referring to the work being done in the protected areas over the last few days D'Souza said, "This is the actual groundwork for the survey."

Goa's protected areas have been identified as a tiger conservation unit (TCU) along with the contiguous forest areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra in a study by international organizations.

The World Wide Fund International, US Fish and Wildlife Services and Wild Life Conservation Society, New York, in a study had categorized the Western Ghats as the second best tiger habitat in India after the Sunderbans in West Bengal.

Dietary flexibility may have helped some large predators survive after last ice age

During the late Pleistocene, a remarkably diverse assemblage of large-bodied mammals inhabited the "mammoth steppe," a cold and dry yet productive environment that extended from western Europe through northern Asia and across the Bering land bridge to the Yukon. Of the large predators--wolves, bears, and big cats--only the wolves and bears were able to maintain their ranges well after the end of the last ice age. A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, suggests that dietary flexibility may have been an important factor giving wolves and bears an edge over saber-toothed cats and cave lions.

"We found that dietary flexibility was strongly species-specific, and that large cats were relatively inflexible predators compared to wolves and bears. This is a key observation, as large cats have suffered severe range contractions since the last glacial maximum, whereas wolves and bears have ranges that remain similar to their Pleistocene ranges," said Justin Yeakel, first author of a paper on the new findings published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Yeakel, now a postdoctoral researcher at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, worked on the study as a graduate student at UC Santa Cruz with coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC. The other coauthors are Paulo Guimarães of the University of São Paolo, Brazil, and Hervé Bocherens of the University of Tübingen, Germany.

The researchers based their findings on an analysis of stable isotope ratios, chemical traces in fossil bones that can be used to reconstruct an animal's diet. They used previously published stable isotope datasets to reconstruct predator-prey interactions at six sites located from Alaska to western Europe. The sites covered a range of time periods before, during and after the last glacial maximum, the period around 20 to 25 thousand years ago when the ice sheets reached their greatest extent.

The study found that the diets of the large cats were similar in different locations, especially in the post-glacial period. Wolves and bears, in contrast, ate different things in different locations. Prey species on the mammoth steppes included bison, horses, yaks, musk oxen, caribou, and mammoths. The researchers noticed changes in predator diets coinciding with an increase in caribou abundance starting around 20,000 years ago.

"During and after the last glacial maximum, many predators focused their attention on caribou, which had been a marginally important prey resource before then," Yeakel said. "Large cats began concentrating almost solely on caribou in both Alaska and Europe. Wolves and bears also began consuming more caribou in Alaska, but not in Europe."

The cave lions and saber-toothed cats of the mammoth steppes were morphologically similar to modern lions, but they went extinct within the past 10,000 years. There were bears similar to modern bears, as well as the short-faced bear, which was larger than a polar bear and has since gone extinct. Interestingly, the short-faced bear is the only species that did not focus on caribou in the post-glacial period.

After the last ice age, a growing human population coincided with the demise of the mammoths and other large fauna of the mammoth steppes. Many species are still around, however, including wolves and bears. According to Yeakel, studies of past ecosystems can inform scientists' understanding of modern carnivores and their capabilities.

"If you look at wolves today, they are specialist carnivores preying on large herbivores like deer and elk, but when we look in the fossil record we see that wolves are remarkably flexible. Their environment today is fairly artificial compared to when they evolved," he said.

The study found that large-scale patterns of interactions differed between locations, but remained stable over time. In Alaska, there was relatively little overlap in the preferred prey of different predator species, whereas predator-prey interactions were less "compartmentalized" in Europe.
"The large-scale patterns don't seem to change, which suggests this community was resilient to the climate changes associated with the last glacial maximum. That makes sense, because it survived multiple ice ages further back in time," Yeakel said.

Exotic cats seized in Kansas arrive in Tampa

TAMPA (FOX 13) - A handful of abandoned exotic cats are finding refuge here in Tampa.
The Humane Society of the United States rescued 11 exotic cats from a Kansas compound over the weekend. They were abandoned by their owner, and living without food or water in small, chain-link cages.

This week, six of those felines are finding their forever home in Tampa. Big Cat Rescue drove up to Kansas over the weekend and took in three bobcats, two lynx, and one Serval to add to their sanctuary. It took almost 24 hours of drive time to tote the cats back to Tampa.
The cats are fairly young, and vets say it's a miracle some of the animals survived in the deplorable conditions.

Big Cat Rescue has prepared private enclosures for each of the cats to live out the rest of their lives, safe and sound.

"I am so relieved that they have taken this move as well as they have. Sometimes, it takes months before the animal trusts us and feels comfortable to lay out in the open. For these guys to get it right away that this is a good place, and that they're never going to be abused again, it makes me feel so good inside to know that we're able to do that for them," Big Cat Rescue's Carol Baskin said Tuesday.
Big Cat Rescue already has about 105 exotic cats. They go through about 500 pounds of raw meat a day to feed the bunch.

Climate Change, Not Human Activity, Led to Megafauna Extinction

May 6, 2013 — Most species of gigantic animals that once roamed Australia had disappeared by the time people arrived, a major review of the available evidence has concluded.

The research challenges the claim that humans were primarily responsible for the demise of the megafauna in a proposed "extinction window" between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago, and points the finger instead at climate change.

An international team led by the University of New South Wales, and including researchers at the University of Queensland, the University of New England, and the University of Washington, carried out the study. It is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The interpretation that humans drove the extinction rests on assumptions that increasingly have been shown to be incorrect. Humans may have played some role in the loss of those species that were still surviving when people arrived about 45,000 to 50,000 years ago -- but this also needs to be demonstrated," said Associate Professor Stephen Wroe, from UNSW, the lead author of the study.
"There has never been any direct evidence of humans preying on extinct megafauna in Sahul, or even of a tool-kit that was appropriate for big-game hunting," he said.

About 90 giant animal species once inhabited the continent of Sahul, which included mainland Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania.

"These leviathans included the largest marsupial that ever lived -- the rhinoceros-sized Diprotodon - and short-faced kangaroos so big we can't even be sure they could hop. Preying on them were goannas the size of large saltwater crocodiles with toxic saliva and bizarre but deadly marsupial lions with flick-blades on their thumbs and bolt cutters for teeth," said Associate Professor Wroe.

The review concludes there is only firm evidence for about 8 to 14 megafauna species still existing when Aboriginal people arrived. About 50 species, for example, are absent from the fossil record of the past 130,000 years.

Recent studies of Antarctic ice cores, ancient lake levels in central Australia, and other environmental indicators also suggest Sahul -- which was at times characterised by a vast desert -- experienced an increasingly arid and erratic climate during the past 450,000 years.

Arguments that humans were to blame have also focused on the traditional Aboriginal practice of burning the landscape. But recent research suggests that the fire history of the continent was more closely linked to climate than human activity, and increases in burning occurred long before people arrived.

"It is now increasingly clear that the disappearance of the megafauna of Sahul took place over tens, if not hundreds, of millennia under the influence of inexorable, albeit erratic, climatic deterioration," said Associate Professor Wroe.

Big Cats Seized In Kansas Now At Florida Animal Sanctuary

ATCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- A northeast Kansas man is in custody after a menagerie of wild cats was seized from private property in northeast Kansas.

Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says one tiger, two cougars, three bobcats, two lynx, one serval and two skunks were taken Sunday from land belonging to a relative of the suspect. Laurie says the animals were living in inadequate enclosures and were infrequently fed.

Staff with the Humane Society of the United States and the Kansas City Zoo helped sedate and move the animals. They've been taken to animal sanctuaries in Texas, Florida and Kansas.

Laurie says the owner became combative during the seizure and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct.

State mulling translocation of surplus big cats from Tadoba

Chandrapur: With population of tigers and leopards soaring high in Tadoba landscape often leading to conflict situation, forest department has decided to take up the challenging task of translocation of surplus big cats in the forests devoid of them. Having received a nod from NTCA, principal secretary (forest) Praveen Pardeshi has directed chief wildlife warden SWH Naqvi to prepare a proposal for the translocation project.

"Good conservation measures have helped in the rise of population of carnivores in Tadoba landscape. Government of India is keen to give permission for translocation of tigers in the forests devoid of them. States like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have shown interest in taking these predators," said Pardeshi in a workshop on man-animal conflict in Tadoba landscape held in Moharli on Sunday.

Translocation is transport and release of wild animals from one location in forest area to another with emphasis on conflict control. With human-leopard conflict raging high in Moharli range in buffer zone and adjoining forests, translocation of surplus population of leopards would come as long term solution to the problem.

Pardeshi claimed that there are surplus tigers in the Tadoba landscape. The population of leopards too has soared. These surplus predators can be translocated to other forest areas. "But, the project will be implemented through strategic planning and scientific approach after seeking proper permission. Chief wildlife warden will prepare a proposal for the project, which will be forwarded to the government for approval," Pardeshi said.

Forest officers and senior wildlife experts discussed the reasons for rising human-leopard conflict and measures to mitigate the problem in the workshop. Deputy director, TATR (buffer), P Kalyankumar highlighted the problem faced during handling the angry crowd during conflict situation. Expert in leopard ecology Dr Vidya Atre and scientist from Wildlife Institute of India ( WII), Dr Habib Bilal gave important inputs in dealing with conflict situation and handling the problem leopards.

CCF, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Sunil Limaye and CCF, Nasik, G Saiprakash also gave presentation on human-leopard conflict in their respective areas. Gram panchayat sarpanches and eco development committee representatives also expressed their woes during the interaction session.

Officers agreed on preparing a technical manual with the help of available experience in dealing with conflict situation. Pardeshi assured to push the proposal at least two full time veterinary doctors for forest department in Chandrapur. He also assured to expedite the process for construction of wildlife rescue centre in Nagpur.

Forest officials also decided to make focused approach in providing employment opportunities to forest dwellers under MREGS. They also agreed to further expand the reach of LPG connection scheme, construction of cattle sheds and latrine construction in forest villages.

CCF and field director of TATR Virendra Tiwari claimed that Rs 1.07 crore was earned through tourism in the park in last fiscal. This year the target has been set at Rs 2 crore. Entire earning will go to TATR tiger foundation and 30% of it will be spent for development of buffer villages.

CCF, Chandrapur, BSK Reddy claimed that the menace of man-eater will be termed as disaster situation and district administration will be involved for disaster management. Every captured carnivore will be implanted with microchip for its identification on recapturing. Forest department will create awareness about threat of carnivores during tendu collection season, he said.

East London - Although widely distributed south of the Sahara, the serval became extinct in the Cape provinces over the last century mainly due to habitat loss, hunting and poaching.
Recently, however, private game reserves in the Eastern Cape have begun reintroducing the species in the hopes of contributing to the eventual re-establishment of these wild cats in the region. 

The serval is one of 10 indigenous wild cats found in Africa. Only three other small wild cats are found in South Africa: the caracal, African wild cat and the black-footed cat. The other three species – the sand cat, golden cat and jungle cat – are found in limited areas in north and central Africa. The remaining big cats of Africa – lion, leopard and cheetah – receive much more attention than their smaller cousins. 

The serval is a medium-sized cat that can weigh up to 20kg. They have particularly long legs that help them to jump up to 3m and they have been seen to catch birds in flight. They also have large ears, giving them excellent hearing and enabling them to detect prey moving underground. 

The Eastern Cape area was once dominated by stock farming, but in recent decades has seen an increase in private game reserves. This is good news for wildlife predators such as jackal, caracal and even leopard, which are hunted and killed for the threat they pose to livestock. In the case of the serval, it was wiped from the area, but as private game reserves grow, so does their capacity to reintroduce indigenous wildlife to the area. 

Kariega Game Reserve is one of the private game reserves in the region that recently released four servals – two male, two female. The Kariega servals were bred by the Cat Conservation Trust, an organisation specialising in the conservation of South Africa’s four small wild cat species – serval, caracal, black-footed cat and wild African cat. 

Before their release on Kariega, the young servals were transferred to a boma enclosure to enable them to adapt to their new surroundings, as well as to be fitted with tracking collars for effective monitoring. The two males have since been released and the females are soon to follow.
A number of other private game reserves in the Eastern Cape have also implemented serval reintroduction programmes, including Shamwari Game Reserve and the Great Fish River Reserve.

CHATTING happily to zookeeper Erika Oulton, soaking up her lion facts and the glorious sunshine in equal measure, I haven’t quite had the time to fully think about what I am about to do.
However, as I round the corner and come face-to-face with the massive bulk that is male Asian lion Jayendra, I suddenly stop in my tracks and feel my heart pounding.

“Perhaps I haven’t thought this through,” I admit quietly to myself while trying to put on my best brave face.
Back in the safety of the office, I had jumped at the chance to become one of the first non-zoo staff to get the rare opportunity to feed two-year-old Jayendra – better known to staff as Jay – and 16-year-old female lion Kamlesh.

Feeding the big cats is one of Edinburgh Zoo’s new Magic Moments experiences, giving animal lovers the chance to spend 30 minutes getting up close and personal with their
favourite zoo residents.
But now the “magic moment” has arrived, I feel decidedly less 
enthusiastic.

We watch Jay and Kamlesh from the safety of the viewing area for a while as animal experience presenter Erika tells me about their feeding habits and types of meat they are given.
The lions are fed every three days, she explains, to mimic their feeding habits in the wild.

During these feeds, they each get between 20 and 25 kilos of meat, which is placed in their enclosure by keepers, who hang it from trees or hide it in bags to allow the lions to be drawn to the meat by their sense of smell.
During these times, Erika is quick to point out, the lions are safely out of the way in a locked area within the enclosure.

No food scandals here, the Edinburgh Zoo lions enjoy a diet mainly consisting of horsemeat, while also receiving the occasional meal of calf, venison and goat.
I have arrived on one of the non-feeding days and will, therefore, be giving the lions a mere “snack” of just over a kilo of horsemeat.

“It’s nothing compared with their big feeds, just like a packet of crisps to me and you,” says Erika.
Jay is pacing up and down in the enclosure and clearly has his eye on something – which makes me slightly nervous, while Kamlesh basks in the sunshine, looking every bit the “old woman” Erika describes her as.

They are aware of our presence but make no move to come any closer.
Erika explains that the Carnivore Magic Moment, which was officially launched last week, has been months in the making.

As well as the laborious task of getting the concept passed by the zoo’s strict health and safety department, Jay and Kamlesh have had to get used to the idea of being fed by people other than their regular keepers.
It turns out they can be quite fussy when it comes to who they feed from, not at all what I was expecting to hear.

“I hadn’t worked with lions for quite a while before we started doing this, so even I was new to them,”
explains Erika. “They have one keeper who they love, and the female would prefer to feed from him, not me. But as she got more used to me, she was happy to feed from me. They know their keepers quite well and that’s why we spent time doing the trials.”

The trials, which started in January, gave office-based zoo staff the chance to get close to the lions and feed them by placing a piece of meat on the end of a pole and pushing it through the double-meshed 
enclosure.

The trials were designed to get Jay and Kamlesh well acquainted with the process, as well as getting a first-hand account of how the office-based employees found the experience.
“They had never fed lions before so they were quite excited by it. We also tried it in different weather to see if the weather had any impact on their feeding.

“This experience is great for animal lovers. We see it getting given as a different birthday present, something you wouldn’t normally do.
“They are really special animals, and we as keepers feel it’s a privilege to work with them.”
Erika, clasping a bowl of portioned horsemeat and two wooden poles, decides that the time has come. We have been there long enough and they will be used to our presence by now.

She explains that we should try and feed the lions together, so that one is not waiting while the other eats, and I heartily agree. Keeping a hungry lion waiting for food is not on my to-do list.
I am told to hold just the top end of the pole and poke it through the mesh, level with the lion’s mouth, then to retract the pole as soon as the meat has been taken.

I take a deep breath as we cross the barrier which separates members of the public from the meshed enclosure, and we stand at a designated safe distance.
We put the horsemeat on the end of our poles and wait for Jay and Kamlesh to see that their “packet of crisps” is ready and waiting.

To my surprise, they don’t stop their current pastimes of pacing and sunbathing to bolt down to where we are standing as soon as they get a whiff of the horsemeat.
In fact, quite the opposite happens and we find ourselves waiting . . . and waiting.

Erika, who started out as a keeper at Edinburgh Zoo 15 years ago, tries cajoling them, in the way you would a family pet.
“Come on Jay, come and get something to eat. Come on Kamlesh – are you not hungry?” she calls out.
After about 15 minutes I begin to resign myself to the fact that I am to leave the zoo without experiencing the magic moment after all.

“Sometimes they’re just not interested”, Erika explains. “And there’s nothing we can do about it. They’re wild animals at the end of the day. If this happened during one of the experiences, we would either reschedule for another day or offer something else on the day.”

Just as I am about to give up all hope, however, Kamlesh rises from her sun-trap and strolls down to us.
After watching Erika administer the feed through the mesh a couple of times, I feel brave enough to give it a go.

Jay – the lion I was meant to feed – was still pacing up and down, keeping a close watch on one of his keepers, who was in the next enclosure helping with the transfer of a wolverine.
“He’s not going to come, so you might as well feed Kamlesh,” says Erika.

“Now, if your piece of meat falls off, just leave it – don’t pick it up. It’s the natural reaction for people to pick it up again.”
I certainly don’t need to be told twice.

My heart starts racing again as I poke the meat through the hole, which is large enough for the portion size, but fortunately not large enough to fit a paw through.
I am surprised at how gently she takes the meat from the pole – I was expecting to have to hang on with two hands to try and wrestle it back again.

But while I can undoubtedly feel the strength of her teeth, she is not aggressive, and waits patiently as we pose for photos and chat in between feeds.
After a short while, Kamlesh gets bored of her snack and meanders off back to her spot in the sun – but not before stopping briefly to visit Jay and make it clear to him she has just eaten.

Jay, however, is still not tempted and continues his vigil at the other end of the enclosure. Fair enough, who am I to argue with a lion?
The experience is now available for bookings, costing £70 a time.

Maintaining the rare breed

EDINBURGH Zoo has two Asian lions. The female, Kamlesh, arrived at the zoo in April 2003 from Chessington World of Adventures and moved into a specially-designed enclosure that was opened in 1999. In June 2012, Kamlesh was joined by a young male called Jayendra, from Bristol Zoo. Jayendra was born in December 2010 and it is hoped he will become a mate for Kamlesh when he has fully matured.

Jayendra and Kamlesh are fed every three days to replicate their feeding practices in the wild. They eat between 20kg and 25kg each per feed and primarily eat horsemeat.

The Asian lion is critically endangered with only a very small remnant population located in India’s Gir Forest. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, there are only about 175 mature Asian lions left in the wild.

The Asian lion differs from the African lion in several ways. Asian lions are generally smaller than their African cousins, and the males do not develop such a substantial mane, so their ears are more visible.

Asian lions in the wild live on a diet of deer, antelope, wild boar and water buffalo. All of the lionesses in the pride hunt together to overpower their prey. Males hardly ever hunt, but will assist the females if they are hunting a large, aggressive animal.

Strict guidelines prevent zoos from maintaining both African and Asian lions for fear of disease transmission or potential hybridisation.

Vehicle collisions the major cause of death for Florida panthers
April 2013. The Florida panther, Florida's official state animal, is one of the most endangered animals on earth, with just 100 to 160 adults remaining, all in southern Florida.

Each and every death is a setback to the species survival, especially if it is a breeding age female, as this one was. The 10 year old female was hit by a vehicle, the sixth panther to be killed this year by such a collision. Last year some 25 panthers died (Potentially ¼ of the population), the majority were hit be vehicles.

Mini Wildcats: The Pocket-Sized Predators of the African Cape

These miniature wildcats face the same dangers from habitat loss as their larger cousins.

You don't have to be a crazy cat lady—or man—to love leopards, get choked up over cheetahs or long to see a lion up-close. There's something transformative about watching a big cat's muscles ripple under its sleek, high-fashion coat, and even the cockiest modern man draped in technology is reminded of his proper place when a lion roars.

But there aren't only three magnificent African cats, there are actually ten, although some weigh as little as three pounds and eat more insects than impalas.

They are just as beautiful and wild as their lime-light hogging big cousins. But in much of their ranges, they're still being persecuted by farmers who view them as livestock-killing vermin, and they're ignored by conservationists who can't get the funding to study them.

Fortunately, for the four species of little cats that call South Africa home, the caracal, serval, african wild cat and black-footed cat, there's the Cat Conservation Trust, a non-profit group that breeds cats in order to release them back into the wild.

It's a slow and sometimes grueling process. Wild cats don't fare very well in captivity, and it's not easy to find landowners that want cats on their property. But private game reserves in South Africa, passionate about restoring the indigenous species that roamed the land before livestock farmers eradicated them, are starting to turn their attention to the little cats.

"So far, we've placed eight servals in game reserves in the area," says Marion Holmes, co-founder of Cat Conservation Trust. "Once tourists have seen the big five, they want to see something a little more unexpected and rare, and game reserve owners are starting to see the potential that servals have on their property both for tourist revenue and rodent control."

Servals are long, lean, elegant cats with delicate features and over-sized ears that can detect rodents moving underground. They are famous for their acrobatics, leaping up to catch birds in flight, and pouncing down on mice, stunning them silly.

"Because our servals are accustomed to seeing humans, even though we make every effort not to touch or tame them in any way, they are ideal for game reserves because they won't run for shelter at the first rumble of a land rover," says Holmes. "So if a game reserve agrees to welcome a serval onto the land, tourists are almost guaranteed to see them, and the cats can do some PR work for all the under-appreciated African felids."
And the other cats certainly need all the PR help they can get. Caracal are still routinely killed by livestock farmers who claim they prey on their sheep and goats. And game reserve owners aren't interested in hosting African wild cats because they look so much like domestic cats that they have "no tourist potential."

"We've found that African wild cats and ferrel cats are interbreeding more and more," says Holmes. "If the diseases ferrel cats carry don't kill the African wild cat, then the interbreeding will slowly lead the species down an evolutionary dead end."

As for the black-footed cat, the smallest wild cat in Africa and the second smallest cat in the world, they fall victim to the poisoned carcasses left out by livestock farmers to kill caracals.

"Black-footed cats can't catch anything bigger than a rabbit, so there's no way they pose any threat to livestock," says Holmes. "But the indiscriminate traps and poisoning techniques of the livestock owners kill these tiny cats who would otherwise serve a really important role keeping rodent levels under control."

"Despite what livestock ranchers think, none of these wild cats want to eat sheep or goats," says Holmes. "Their bodies aren't designed for such high-fat diets and it causes significant liver and kidney damage. But like anyone or thing that's hungry, they will steal if they can't get what they need to survive.

She adds, "It doesn't have to be this way. If more land was left undisturbed there would be plenty of small natural prey for them and livestock owners wouldn't even see them, let alone have reason to kill them."

Goa, synonymous with sun, sea and surf, may soon have a new attraction — tigers

For the first time, cameras put up by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) caught a big cat strolling in the state’s Mhadei sanctuary last week. And then on Thursday, a tigress and two cubs were photographed.

The findings give hope that the state government will now declare the sanctuary, located in the ecologically-rich Western Ghats, a tiger reserve.

Such a proposal was made two years ago, when then environment minister Jairam Ramesh asked the Goa government to declare 500sqkm of the Mhadei region a tiger reserve after initial indications of the presence of tigers.

But the state government was reluctant, apparently due to opposition from the strong mining lobby. The Mhadei region — half of which has been damaged by mining — has rich ore reserves and notifying it as a tiger reserve would have meant no mining.  

Officially, the government said there wasn't enough evidence of Mhadei being home to tigers on a permanent basis.

That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

The camera traps were installed a few months ago, after reports of pugmarks and scat (tiger droppings). The main objective was not only to see if the area had any big cats but also to find out if they were just travelling in search for food after crossing over from neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra.

On Friday, Goa's chief wildlife warden, Richard D'Souza, said: "There are tigers in an area of around 200sqkm." Evidence with the state forest department suggests there are at least half a dozen tigers in Goa.

The pictures will now be matched with the WCS database to find out if these tigers are unique to Goa - the animals can be identified by their stripes. Once the WCS report is in, the forest department plans to push the notification of declaring the region a tiger reserve.

And if that happens, the department will get additional funds from the National Tiger Conservation Authority for protection and conservation of the endangered species.

Tigress confirmed as native of Mhadei



PANAJI: The forest department notched another conclusive find on the big cat's trail after an expert ruled that the tigress captured on camera recently in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary is a native of the state.
Photographic evidence gathered using the camera trap technology at the site of a wild boar kill on April 18, and a few days later was dispatched to noted scientist Kota Ullas Karanth for comparison.

The conservation zoologist informed the Goa government that the photos of the tigress did not match with any of the 600 tigers in his database.

The differences in stripe patterns has set apart the tigress from the other big cats of Karnataka and other states in the Western Ghats.

Principal chief conservator of forests Richard D'Souza told TOI, "As the stripes of the tigress found in Goa do not match those of tigers from other states this is indeed a tigress from the forests of Mhadei."

This more corroborative camera trap-evidence along with the earlier circumstantial findings like scats in various parts of the state is expected to swing the tide in favour of a tiger reserve proposal in Mhadei's protected area. But the proposal may have to wait for the completion of the four-year study by Karanth.

Paresh Porob, range forest officer at the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, had selected camera-trap points on cues such as presence of earlier tiger scats, scrapes, scent deposits, tracks and intersections of trails.

Reacting to the photographic evidence, Prerna Bindra, member of the National Wildlife Board of India, told TOI, "Goa is known for the presence of tigers since it is part of the Western Ghats forests. Besides the tigress captured on camera, the movement of another tigress with two cubs has been revealed through pugmarks and sightings by locals. I will request the state as well as central governments to take needful steps for the protection of the big cat in the area."

Bittu Sahgal, initiator of Kids for Tigers told TOI from Mumbai, "As the presence of the tiger in Goa has been confirmed scientifically the government has to do something about it. The presence of a tigress in Goa is the real pride of the state's beautiful jungles."

Taiwan's clouded leopard extinct: zoologists

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) The Formosan clouded leopard, a subspecies endemic to Taiwan, is now extinct, according to a team of zoologists from Taiwan and the United States that had been trying for 13 years to find the animal.

"There is little chance that the clouded leopard still exists in Taiwan. There may be a few of them, but we do not think they exist in any significant numbers," zoologist Chiang Po-jen told media reporters Monday.

Chiang and Pei Jai-chyi, a professor at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology who is known as a leading figure in Taiwan's wildlife conservation movement, invited the team of zoologists in 2001 to search for the tree-dwelling cat in Taiwan's primary forests in Dawu Mountain, Jade Mountain and Taroko National Park.

In the search for the leopard that typically weighs 10-20 kilograms, the researchers set up some 1,500 infrared cameras and scent traps in the mountains but no evidence was found to suggest that the endemic clouded leopard still exists, according to Chiang.

Pei said the team concluded that the Formosan clouded leopard has become extinct because of humans' hunting and habitat destruction caused by human development.

The results were "disappointing," said one of the zoologists Liu Jian-nan, who is a post-doctoral fellow at the Biodiversity Research Center of Academia Sinica.

He said the search was driven by the faith that the endemic clouded leopard still existed in Taiwan and that the team would spot a live one.

Now the only Formosan clouded leopard left in Taiwan is the stuffed specimen at National Taiwan Museum, Liu said. The two live clouded leopards at Taipei Zoo are imported species from Southeast Asia, he added.

The research findings have been submitted to Oryx, an international conservation journal, and are expected to be published in the next six months, according to Liu.

Kuan Li-hao, a division chief at the Council of Agriculture's (COA) Forestry Bureau, said that after the report is published, the COA's Wildlife Conservation Advisory Committee will seek to verify the information and will decide whether the Formosan clouded leopard should be taken off the government's list of protected animals in Taiwan.

From student riots to anti-social behaviour, youths are often singled out for their lack of respect for authority.
But it appears that humans are not the only species with a discipline problem, as this lion cub's insouciant reaction to his father's bellowing shows.
The grumpy lion gave the playful youngster the hairdryer treatment for blocking his path as they wandered a trail in Botswana.

The cub remained unruffled, however, giving him a look as if to say, in the words of spoof terror-teen Vikki Pollard: 'Am I bovvered?'
The pride had been enjoying a stroll following an afternoon nap in the the Linyanti area, which straddles the border between Botswana and Namibia.
 
It appeared as though the pride's leader, nicknamed Romeo, had got out of the wrong side of the bed when, as his cubs frolicked in the warm sun around him, one ran on stood directly in his path.
Romeo roared and, according to witnesses, sent the terrified cub scampering away. On the evidence of these photos, however, it seems like the youngster remained defiant right up to the last second.

'It was afternoon and the pride was slowly waking up after the midday rest. The last member of the pride to wake was the alpha-male named Romeo, who was sleeping apart from the rest of the pride,' he said.

'As soon as he woke up the pride went to the river area, for hunting. The zebras and impalas were occupying that area, mainly. We were interested and carefully started to follow them.
'Before entering the high-grass Romeo had a little fun with two lion cubs. Afterwards the glad cubs were running in front of Romeo and behind the two lionesses.

'Straight before the high-grass area with narrow path, one of the cubs ran after the lionesses while another one stopped as he was waiting for his father.'

Mr Cherkasov went on: 'Romeo didn't really appreciate that. He thought that the cub was blocking the way and he decided to castigate the small lion.
'Romeo bent closer to the cub and roared at him angrily.

'The cub was so scared that he jumped a bit in panic and run away to the open space.
'Romeo grumbled a bit on the way to the rest of the pride, but calmed down quite quickly. Later the pride continued the hunting.
'The two lionesses didn't react at all. I think they preferred not to interfere in the educational process.'

Top Cats: How Pumas and Other Apex Predators' Populations Affect The Big Biodiversity Picture

Two years ago, a stellar cast of ecologists changed the way conservation scientists think about biodiversity. As we tumble headlong into the sixth great extinction, biologists have focused largely on protecting regions with the highest number of species. By saving the most species, the thinking goes, you’ll conserve the greatest number of ecological interactions and so the greatest biodiversity. But in a study that drew on ecological theory and contemporary studies of apex predators like wolves and pumas, the all-star team of ecologists found that some species matter more than others. Losing top predators, they argued, can have far-reaching, irreversible effects on the structure, function and biodiversity of ecosystems.

Ecological theory predicts that changes in the abundance and distribution of top predators can cause substantial shifts in ecosystems. And recent studies—many published in the new millennium—have shown how theoretical predictions play out on the landscape. The collapse of sea otter populations on Amchitka Island in the Aleutian Islands decimated kelp forests by allowing unfettered expansion of sea urchins, the otters’ main food. The loss of wolves in Yellowstone’s Lamar River Valley famously allowed elk to forage with abandon, arresting the development of streamside willows and other riparian vegetation. In Venezuela, forests without jaguars, pumas and eagles had almost no vegetative underbrush compared to the lush understory in forests where predators kept ungulate herbivores in check.

But, according to the study, the loss of large top predators can also lead to soaring rates of wildfires, infectious disease and carbon emissions, and degrade water quality and nutrient cycles.

These “top down” trophic cascades, which the ecologists dubbed “trophic downgrading,” have been documented from the poles to the equators and every major biome in between, making the loss of top predators, they wrote, “arguably humankind’s most pervasive influence on the natural world." Earth has weathered five mass extinctions but never before at the hands of one species—human beings. And we humans seem hell bent on clearing the Earth of larger bodied apex predators.

I considered all this as I read a new paper from wildlife ecologist Chris Wilmer’s lab (published last week in PLOS ONE) that looks at how human development affects pumas. Like most large carnivores, pumas need vast territories to hunt, find mates and raise young. Pumas living in the San Francisco Bay Area have no such luck. Wilmers, an associate professor of environmental studies at the University of California-Santa Cruz, has been studying the effects of habitat fragmentation on the behavior, ecology and even the physiology of pumas around the Santa Cruz Mountains. He develops cutting-edge GPS collars to track both the location and behavior of his animals.

Fragmented landscapes often pave the way to extinction for wide-ranging large carnivores like pumas, with cascading effects. Freed from the threat of top predators, smaller carnivores like foxes increase in number, driving declines in birds and small mammals. But habitat fragmentation can produce effects similar to extinction because large predators tend to avoid small fragmented parcels. Given the heterogeneous patterns of human developments—with houses and other structures interspersed among natural areas—predicting how animals might respond, and with what consequences, presents a serious challenge.

Since pumas make risk-benefit calculations just like the rest of us and typically avoid humans—their biggest cause of death, aside from roads—Wilmers wanted to know what factors govern their decisions. He and his team figured the cats would steer clear of neighborhoods, where they’d risk seeing their nemesis in various activities, more than roads, where traffic can be sporadic. And they predicted the cats would respond differently depending on their reproductive status. If running into humans meant losing a meal, that would prove less costly from an evolutionary perspective, than if it meant losing a chance to mate or raise young—since, as any evolutionary biologist will tell you, we exist primarily to reproduce.

The team combined their GPS data with field visits to determine whether cats were simply going about their business—that is, feeding (based on the analysis of GPS data and confirmed by finding prey remains) or moving about the landscape (GPS readings not linked to kill or den sites)—or engaged in reproductive behavior—denning (indicated by a female staying within a spot and making repeated return visits) or communicating (indicated by “scrapes,” urine-soaked leaves and debris mounded with the hind feet, the puma version of “here’s my number.”)

As predicted, the cats’ response to developments varied with their reproductive status. The data collected on their 20 collared pumas (12 females and 8 males) showed that the animals give human developments a wider berth when engaged in reproductive behaviors. Given how frequently human run-ins result in death for pumas around the Bay Area, it’s not surprising that evolutionary pressures selected against placing the next generation at risk. Similarly, the cats seem to have learned that placing their calling card near trails leaves them vulnerable to destruction by hikers and bikers.

Still, it appears that taking care of large cubs makes mom willing to take more risks. The team found that females with dependent young showed higher tolerance for residential developments than males, possibly because they can’t afford to be choosy about where they find prey. Still, one male in the study did go near developments—a young male seeking new territory—an extremely risky behavior that the sexually immature male shot in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto learned too late.

There’s no doubt that our behavior influences the big cats’ behavior. If you live on the edge of puma habitat and plant lush gardens, you’ll attract deer—and likely their ancient predator. If you don’t safeguard your goats and sheep in enclosed pens at night, you’re just asking for trouble. An astonishing eight of the 11 adult pumas the team studied were shot for attacking livestock.

By understanding where, when and how pumas use their increasingly fragmented habitat, Wilmers and his team can predict how they might respond as development continues. They can also predict, and hopefully mitigate, likely conflicts between humans and the increasingly boxed-in carnivores. But ecologists, even the best ecologists, can do only so much. They need the rest of us to decide whether we’re ready to reverse the trophic downgrading of the planet before it’s too late.

Bhadra Reserve completes 1 year of intensive monitoring of big cats

Bengaluru: In the last 12 months, the foresters inside Bhadra Tiger Reserve in Chikma­g­lur District have been able to step up their monitoring of every nook and cranny of the Reserve, tha­n­ks to a tech-aided monitoring system for tigers that works as well as for the predator as it does for their human protectors.
The Bhadra Tiger Reser­ve is one among some eight tiger reserves in the country where the project M-STrIPES (Monitoring of Tigers —Intensive Patroll­ing and Ecological Status) has been implemented over the last year by the National Tiger Conserva­tion Authority (NTCA).
The programme enables Park Directors countrywide to assess the patro­ll­ing areas covered by the field staff using GPS. Similarly, field staff during their monitoring of the areas inside the Reserve, are able to record the sightings of animals and any signs of intrusion or anything that seems out of the ordinary.
The officials from the Bhadra Reserve said that post the M-STrIPES programme, the forest staff are now familarised with taking photographs of animals and crime scene and are now adept at uploading it all on the software. The software developed with help from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun experts, records the route that foresters have covered and what kind of reports are being uploaded on the website. The Park directors and senior wildlife officials in Bengaluru too have access to the information that is being fed into the software by field staff.
Officials from the NTCA said that the M-STrIPES will continue to be in operation in Bhadra and seven other Tiger Reserves. “This year we will be adding 10 more Tiger Reserves in the country under the M-STrIPES and another Tiger Reserve from Karnataka will be considered for the project. In the next few years all the Tiger Reserves in the country will be covered under the programme,” said the official.
According to the last Tiger census, Bhadra has 3.1 tigers per 100 sq kms, as compared to 11.8 tigers in Nagarhole and Bandipur. “There is a tremendous scope for increase in the tiger population and it will take at least 10 years for the Reserve to have bigger tiger population. The M-STrIPES will ensure that the threats of poaching big cats, which are anticipated from the fringe areas will be curbed,” said a forest official from Bhadra.
Tiger Biologist Dr K. Ullas Karanth feels that the Bhadra Tiger Reserve has a high potential for the survival of viable populations of tigers in the future. "There is a rich prey density and Reserve is covered by high mountains. The Reserve has got a secure future as far as tigers are considered,” Dr Karanth said.
